Metal Hypersensitivity to Implant Materials

چکیده
Hypersensitivity to TMJ implant materials is an issue that we are frequently hearing from TMJ patients. Given this concern we contacted Marco Caicedo, Ph.D., Senior Scientists and COO at Orthopedic Analysis in Chicago, IL. Orthopedic Analysis is an independent diagnostics company dedicated to the quantitative analysis of immune responses to biomaterials (i.e metal allergy to implant materials). The TMJ Association thanks Dr. Caicedo for writing this state-of-the-art article.

Hypersensitivity to Implant Debris
Total Joint Replacements (TJR) have been extremely successful over the past 50 years, restoring mobility and function to millions of people each year. However, over time these implants need replacing for a number of reasons, such as infection or increasing immune reactivity to implant debris. All implant metals degrade in vivo, and the released products biologically interact locally and systemi...
متن کاملBiomaterial Hypersensitivity: Is It Real? Supportive Evidence and Approach Considerations for Metal Allergic Patients following Total Knee Arthroplasty
The prospect of biomaterial hypersensitivity developing in response to joint implant materials was first presented more than 30 years ago. Many studies have established probable causation between first-generation metal-on-metal hip implants and hypersensitivity reactions. In a limited patient population, implant failure may ultimately be related to metal hypersensitivity. The examination of hyp...
متن کاملMetal Hypersensitivity in Orthodontic Patients
Orthodontic treatment of individuals with metal hypersensitivity is a matter of concern for the orthodontist. Orthodontic appliances contain metals like Nickel, Cobalt and Chromium etc. Metals may cause allergic reactions and are known as allergens. Reaction to these metals is due to biodegradation of metals in the oral cavity. This may lead to the formation of corrosion products and their expo...
متن کاملAvailability of Total Knee Arthroplasty Implants for Metal Hypersensitivity Patients
Purpose To provide information on the type of "hypersensitivity-friendly" components available for primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in the current market. Materials and Methods Implant manufactures were identified using the 2013 National Joint Registries of the United Kingdom and Sweden and contacted to obtain information about the products they offer for patients with metal hypersensiti...
متن کاملTitanium allergy: could it affect dental implant integration?
PURPOSE Degradation products of metallic biomaterials including titanium may result in metal hypersensitivity reaction. Hypersensitivity to biomaterials is often described in terms of vague pain, skin rashes, fatigue and malaise and in some cases implant loss. Recently, titanium hypersensitivity has been suggested as one of the factors responsible for implant failure. Although titanium hypersen...
